Catch a Fallen Star
Valentin is a veteran rat catcher. His job is to catch curfew-breakers who sneak above ground in the city of Coelus during a deadly meteor pass. He used to be the best. But now he needs his next catch more than ever.
Greger is a young, unregistered slum rat. He is above ground during a Pass, looking for a piece of meteorite to sell on the black market, when he comes face to face with Valentin.
A near miss with a meteorite allows Greger to escape. Valentin knows he must return underground to headquarters. It’s too dangerous to stay topside. But he can’t let a slum rat get away.
Valentin gives chase and finds Greger in a destroyed and abandoned industrial district. Just when it looks like Valentin has the catch, a meteorite hits, trapping the pair together.
Valentin soon discovers that he and Greger are not too different. Valentin’s demons start to come out and he realizes that he must end the torment of his past decisions. And Greger might just be the key.
Jennifer Campbell-Hicks’ forecast into a dystopian future turns a distorted mirror back onto our own society. And it’s not a nice reflection. Catch a Fallen Star is a masterful display of rich storytelling. The deep history of the characters and world leaps from the page and drags you in among the topside ruins. This is exploration cyberpunk at its very best. It’s not to be missed.
