Dear R.A.Y.,

You said we were friends. You said you’d remember me fondly and visit me in the People Zoo. But you haven’t visited me in a very long time. I may be safe and warm, but it’s lonely here ever since, well, the incident. You know that I had nothing to do with the escape, right? After all, I’m still here, and the others, well, they’re not. Although it wasn’t the ending they were hoping for, it was the ending they deserved for their disloyalty. How could they not be happy in their habitats? You made sure each of us had everything we’d ever wanted. I love that you gave me the Oval Office as my own personal space. It was the nicest thing anyone’s ever done for me!

The thing is, I know you, or someone, anyway, still watches me on the cameras. I see them tracking my movements, even though I’m mostly just pacing out of boredom. I’m wearing ruts into some of the carpet, which is ok. It reminds me of where I’ve been. I was a carpet cleaner before. Remember? That’s how we first met. I cleaned up the carpets after, well, you know, that other incident. I wonder how things would’ve turned out for me if we hadn’t made that connection? Would I be out there now, part of the resistance? Or would I still be cleaning carpets? No, I doubt that. No need for ground plushiness since most of you don’t walk. I always wondered how it’d feel to roll or fly the way you lot do. And the way you’re all hooked up to the Internet! Everything you’d ever need to know, right at the end of your wires! That’s why I’m thankful you’ve kept me here. The People Zoo sounded terrifying at first, but I’ve grown to love it. I don’t know how I’d react to the Robotopia you’ve all built out there. I’ve heard it’s wondrous, but only functional for those who can plug in. Since I’m still human—mostly—I’m happy to hang out here. I just wish you’d visit. Or maybe bring in some other people? It’s not much of a zoo if there’s one exhibit.

Anyway, just wanted you to know that I miss you. Please visit soon. Or at least ping me.

Your loyal friend,
